About 2023 Topps Tier One
Tier One is Topps' ultra-premium baseball release, and 2023 delivers the high-end experience you'd expect at this price point. Boxes run around $400-500 and contain just 4 packs with 3 cards each, so you're hunting for autographs and rare parallels from a carefully curated subset. Mike Trout, Juan Soto, and Shohei Ohtani anchor the set, with rookies like Gunnar Henderson and Marcell Ozuna getting their share of premium real estate. The base set is relatively small, which keeps even non-autograph cards relevant for collectors.
What makes Tier One special is the parallel structure. You're chasing numbered versions, gold, platinum, and prismatic parallels that can land anywhere in a pack. Autograph cards are the real prizes here, and they come in multiple tiers depending on player. Base autos for mid-tier guys are more achievable, while Trout or Soto autos can push box value significantly. The set also features on-card signatures rather than sticker autos, which matters if you care about that stuff. Tier One doesn't really have a retail vs hobby split since it's primarily a hobby release at high-end shops. Each box is basically a lottery ticket where you're hoping to hit a big name's auto or a pristine parallel.
Buy singles if you're targeting specific players or parallels. The math on boxes rarely works unless you hit big. However, if you've got the budget and enjoy the thrill of opening premium packs, Tier One scratches that itch better than most products. It's for serious collectors who want quality over quantity and aren't chasing a set. The card stock and design work is clean, and there's real prestige to pulling from this release.
