2023 Topps Series 2

This is the back half of Topps' final baseball release before losing its MLB license to Fanatics. 2023 Series 2 hit shelves in late summer and covered the trade deadline acquisitions, mid-season breakouts, and the stretch run toward October. You get your first Topps cards of guys who switched teams, plus base rookies for prospects who debuted after Series 1 dropped. Shohei Ohtani's Series 2 card is a key pull given his move to the Dodgers mid-season. Clayton Kershaw also has a notable Series 2 appearance. The set includes the usual Topps parallels and inserts, all riding the wave of collector interest in what amounts to a final chapter for the brand's long run with MLB. What makes this worth hunting depends on your priorities. Base parallels range from common stuff like green and blue all the way up to printing plates and one-of-ones, with gold parallels typically seeing decent demand. Salute inserts, Diamond Sparkle, and the standard Topps throwback parallels are the chase cards most collectors are after. Autograph content exists but isn't thick in standard packs, so hobby boxes are your better bet if you're signature hunting. The big play is hunting Ohtani base parallels or any Ohtani insert hits, which carried premium prices through the end of the year. Kershaw and Aaron Judge also move product. Pick this up if you want the final Topps chapter or you're specifically chasing Ohtani's last few years under the brand. Series 2 is fine for ripping if you like the base set, but the hit rates aren't special compared to other 2023 Topps releases. For most collectors, buying singles of the exact parallels you want makes more sense than box hunting. This set has aged fine in terms of collectibility, but it's not driving crazy secondary market prices like some '23 releases did early on. Treat it as a completion piece rather than an investment.
