About 2023 Topps Allen & Ginter
Allen and Ginter is Topps' annual oddball set that leans hard into the vintage aesthetic and quirky subjects that have nothing to do with baseball. The 2023 release features MLB stars like Mike Trout, Juan Soto, and Shohei Ohtani alongside non-sport subjects: historical figures, animals, Olympic moments, and random achievements. Each pack delivers a mix of base cards, parallels, and inserts that keep the ripping experience unpredictable. The set's charm lies in its throwback design and the fact that you never know what you're going to pull next to your favorite ballplayer. It's less about chasing one specific card and more about enjoying the hunt across multiple subject categories.
The real value in Allen and Ginter lives in the parallel versions. Look for Minis (shorter versions of base cards), Framed Minis, and various color parallels that range from common to near-impossible pulls. Mini versions in particular command a premium since collectors love the miniature aesthetic. Autograph cards and relic pulls are scattered throughout retail and hobby boxes, though they're not the main draw here. Hobby boxes typically offer better odds at higher-end hits compared to retail, but retail blasters provide good value if you're after base set completion and common parallels. The Non-Sport subset has developed its own collector base, so those cards can hold value independent of the baseball component.
This is a set to rip if you enjoy the gamble and the quirky appeal. It's less efficient for pure baseball card collectors building a specific player collection, since you're guaranteed to pull plenty of non-sport filler. That said, if you're building the full set or hunting particular parallels, buying singles is smarter than gambling on boxes. Allen and Ginter works best for people who appreciate vintage design, enjoy variety in their pulls, and don't mind cards of historical inventors alongside Mookie Betts.
