About 2022 Topps Series 1
Released in early 2022, this product arrived during one of baseball's strangest years, marking the first Series 1 under Topps' new ownership while the industry held its breath over the MLB licensing battle. The set centers on a strong rookie class headlined by Julio Rodriguez, who immediately became a chase card after his call-up to Seattle. You also get a solid mix of established stars like Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, and Aaron Judge spread throughout the base set. The design is fairly clean with a horizontal layout and team colors that pop. Series 1 functions as a complete standalone set of around 330 cards, though it's the first of several releases that year, so if you're building everything, plan accordingly.
The real value lies in the parallel tiers. Topps released their standard rainbow of variations including Gold, Silver, Black, and Rainbow Foil parallels at different price points. Rodriguez rookies in higher-tier parallels like 1/1 Black or numbered Rainbow versions can pull solid money, especially if you find an autograph version in the short-printed boxes. Hobby boxes tend to have more consistent pull rates for numbered parallels compared to retail, which focuses more on base card volume. The autograph content isn't overstocked, so when you hit one, odds are decent it lands a player with real collector demand. Retail blasters and hangers are fine for casual building but offer fewer guarantees.
This product makes sense if you're specifically chasing Rodriguez's rookie parallels or building a clean master base set without breaking the bank. The uninspiring design and market saturation from multiple 2022 Topps releases means resale can be slow unless you hit one of the card's few chase rookies. Buying singles of the base rookies you actually want beats ripping boxes for most collectors.
