About 2022 Topps Chrome
Chrome was Topps' sleek, modern take on the base set in 2022, dropping just as the card market was cooling from its pandemic peak. You're looking at the rookie class headlined by Julio Rodriguez and Gunnar Henderson, plus established stars like Juan Soto and Aaron Judge in their refractor glory. The product leans hard on what Chrome does best: rainbow refractors that catch light in ways regular cardboard can't. Base Chrome cards have that distinctive prism finish that separates them from standard Topps releases, and the set includes the usual suspects you'd expect from a major release that year. This isn't about surprise rookie finds, it's about chasing parallel versions of players you already know you want.
What makes Chrome worth hunting is the parallel structure. You've got your standard refractors, blue refractors, gold refractors, and ultra-rare red refractors with much tighter print runs. The higher-end parallels, especially numbered versions, move the needle on value. Hobby boxes come with more premium pulls than retail, which means better odds at those scarcer parallel tiers. Autograph content exists but isn't the main draw here, Chrome is really about the visual appeal of the refractor technology. Rodriguez and Henderson rookie refractors in the colored tiers hold solid value if you pull them, and Judge's parallels never disappear from collector want lists.
Chrome works best if you enjoy the hunt for parallels and appreciate the visual presentation more than chasing specific insert sets. It's a solid rip product if you like opening boxes, but singles buying is probably smarter if you have specific parallel targets in mind. The set doesn't have the nostalgia factor of vintage Chrome years or the novelty factor of experimental products, so it sits somewhere in the middle of collector priorities. Buy cases if you're cracking for fun, but be selective about which parallels you're actually chasing.
