About 2021 Topps Series 1
Released in early 2021, Topps Series 1 served as the flagship opening salvo for the year and featured a strong rookie class headlined by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was already making waves after his 2020 debut. The set also included Shohei Ohtani and Fernando Tatis Jr. in their prime collecting windows, along with the usual mix of veterans and prospects. The base design is clean and straightforward, with team-colored borders and a centered player photo. You're getting 330 base cards plus numerous parallel and insert options. The set was widely available in both hobby and retail channels, so sealed product has remained relatively affordable compared to earlier years in the decade.
The real chase cards start with the SP variations and short prints scattered throughout the base set. Look for the Chrome Refractors, which come in standard, gold, green, and red parallel tiers. Topps also loaded Series 1 with insert sets like Opening Day, Rookie Debut, and various autograph content depending on box type. Hobby boxes typically offer one autograph per box, while retail hobby boxes are hit-or-miss. Target the Guerrero Jr. base cards and parallel runs if you're focused on a single player, or hunt the low-numbered serially printed cards from the Chrome set if you're chasing condition and rarity. The autograph pulls carry the weight of value, especially rookie signatures from the better prospects.
This is a solid rip product if you enjoy the hunt and don't mind the variance. For most collectors building a complete base set, buying singles makes more sense. The secondary market has plenty of inventory, so prices on non-serial commons are very reasonable. If you're specifically targeting rookie autographs or want the Chrome parallels, a few hobby boxes could scratch that itch, but know going in that you might walk away with commons and mid-tier parallel hits. It's a product worth revisiting if you have nostalgia for 2021 releases, but newer Series sets have better rookie classes and more refined insert design.
