About 2020 Bowman Chrome
Released during the height of the pandemic card boom, 2020 Bowman Chrome captured the prospect market at a fever pitch. This set is all about tracking the next generation of MLB talent, with heavy focus on top prospects like Jasson Dominguez, Luis Robert Jr., and Ke'Bryan Hayes before they became household names. Chrome delivers that signature refractor technology that makes base cards pop on the shelf, and the rookie class here has aged surprisingly well since many of these guys are now established major leaguers. The product landed during a chaotic time for the hobby, which means boxes ran anywhere from retail to three figures depending on timing and availability. If you're hunting nostalgia for when these prospects were still mysterious, this set hits different today.
What makes Bowman Chrome interesting is the parallel structure. You've got your standard refractors, plus colored parallels like Blue, Purple, and Gold that range in rarity depending on the specific parallel tier. Autograph content shows up as Autograph Refractor versions and Prospect Autographs, which is where the real money lives. Hobby boxes carry the good stuff, retail boxes are thinner on hits. Base refractors of the top prospects still hold value, especially if they grade well, but it's the signed parallels that get collectors excited. Robert and Dominguez autos are the big chases, though they were scarce enough even then that most of us were chasing the base refs instead.
This product works best if you're either a prospect completist or buying singles of specific players you care about. Ripping boxes is fun but expensive in today's market, and you'll probably pull a lot of names you've forgotten about by now. The real value came out early when nobody knew who would stick in the majors. If you missed this the first time around, targeting specific prospects you like makes more sense than hunting packs or boxes. It's a nostalgia play more than an investment angle at this point.
