2019 Topps Update Series

This is the mid-year refresh that catches all the trades, call-ups, and rookie debuts that happened after the main 2019 Topps set wrapped. You're getting early cards of guys like Pete Alonso tearing it up for the Mets, Fernando Tatis Jr. in a Padres uniform, and established stars in new uniforms after the deadline shuffle. The base set runs around 300 cards and fills the gaps that the spring release left behind. It's a solid grab if you missed the opening salvo or want to chase the rookies who broke through mid-season. Parallels include the usual Topps suspects: Chrome, Black, Gold, and Rainbow foils at various rarity levels. There's also green, blue, and red parallels that show up in retail and hobby boxes. The inserts lean toward throwback designs and player-specific subsets. Where the real action is depends on what you're after. Alonso and Tatis base cards and parallels remain the chase cards, especially the low-numbered /99 and /50 versions. The Rookie Cup designation moves some of those needle-moving rookies. If you're opening boxes, you're hoping for autograph or relic hits since the base set isn't particularly tight. Hobby boxes give you better odds at premium parallels and hits compared to retail blasters or hangers. The Chrome and Black parallels pull the most premium prices when you find them graded. If you're building the base set, buy singles. The product isn't rare enough to justify the box cost unless you want to chase parallel hits or autos. For rookie collectors, Alonso and Tatis singles are still reasonably priced and worth holding. Update sets generally soften in value once the next season starts, so if you're just filling holes, wait a few months. This is a respectable product for completing your 2019 run, but it's not where you go hunting for home runs anymore.
